Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre
Asian elephants! Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, as it is popularly know, is situated in Lanchang, Pahang. Located about 90km north-east of Kuala Lumpur, it takes approximately 1hr 30mins to drive to the sanctuary from KL.

The National Elephant Conservation Centre (the official name) is managed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN). Being one of its kind in Malaysia, this is the home to the Elephant Translocation Team and resident elephants.

It is a well-managed centre with friendly and experienced staffs. The centre opens to the public at 2pm. Entry is free, only the first 200 visitors will receive the yellow sticker. Those with the yellow stickers are entitled for a free elephant ride around the centre, so it is worthwhile to arrive as early as possible.

This is where they keep the elephants during the day. Those barrier columns serve as a dual protection – preventing the elephants from escaping and also allowing the staffs to enter and exit through the gaps.
The activity at the centre starts at 2.15pm – elephant ride, 2.30pm – bathing and 3.00pm – feeding.
Just hop on the elephant with the guide from the staffs there, and feel yourselves jiggling on this magnificent animals as it takes you around the centre.

Everyone gets a chance to feed the elephants with fruits and vegetables. After the feeding and petting session, the elephants are led to the river where they are washed and bathed. Visitors are allowed to participate in swimming with the elephants – quite an experience.

A very brief video presentation on how these massive animals are translocated and their diminishing habitat is an eye opener to the public. Make sure you stay there and view the video.
This conservation centre is wholly funded by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. If you have a big heart for the elephants, your donation is very much welcomed. All funding are used to support the relocation of elephants and towards the upkeep of the elephants in this centre.
Since it was a work visit with several officers from PERHILITAN, I did not get to engage in the activities. Nonetheless, I look forward to making a personal trip there! Any takers?
Love the elephants? Feel free to visit PERHILITAN website.
Remark: The last time I was there, telco DiGi has yet to extend its coverage in Kuala Gandah. As such, it’s only you, the elephant and the nature. No iPhones!
